November Ice

30 November 2012, Saint Paul

Everything's a black box
like the car, or border collies
barking at chain link fences

The vultures on power lines look
like sheet music for a Bach cantata
too difficult for mortals play

The reflections of passing clouds look
like a well-rehearsed Argentine tango
performed between invisible partners

And now the pond's November ice looks
like too many unanswered questions
unattended and too heavy to float
