for James Krehbiel

Transects scribed on bedrock
to count strange phenomena
and reaffirm change in some
astronomical movement

We build observatories
then conjure narratives too
perfect for revision from
conflicting revelations

Scientist and shaman take
shallow comfort tracking time
yet seem to revel knowing
precisely when to plant corn
