Treated Lumber

Saint Paul, 30 June 2008

Generations of species
perished instantly
others, who weathered
protracted departures
have descendents who
are cheerfully immune
to the killer cocktails
suffused in wood

Exhuming the timber steps
at our elder's homestead
moist, punky, rotten steps
cavitated courtesy of
a heaving, respiring soil

I thump a pick axe to dirt
exhausted, dripping wet
and stunned by naiveté

I remember nature
is a steadfast
recycler
